Have You Well Prepared For the  Subprime Crisis Impact?  Is Data Warehouse A Choice?

Author: Stephen (DW instructor at Victoria College)

It is a fact that the continuing devastation unleashed by the US subprime crisis not only impacts America’s economy, but also the globally impacts may come as the dominoes effect. The recession of US also seems an admitted fact according to some economists forecast. The global trend is an unchangeable fact, but our attitude and preparation can be under our control.

According to the Goldman Sachs survey published in 2008 July, there is a demand for discretionary IT projects slows, CIOs anticipate cutting contract IT workers, staff from third-party service providers and even some of their own in-house staff. The global services companies will also feel the pinch due the slowing economy. ROI is always an important consider form all business; budget control will become more significant. In turn, outsourcing will still plays an important role in finance control.

Facing the coming challenges, how do we prepare for the coming challenges? What’s the tactics for that?

  • 6 Recession Proof IT Jobs

Personality for sure is a critical factor for success in career, but right choice of your job is also a crucial factor to help us to achieve the goal getting a good life. As the waves of Y2K and dot com have raised and fall. Technology is still one of the two wheels to help a business success. When we decide to dive into the main stream of technology, it is not easy to decide we choose the right one. Some factors which need to be considered such as the publicity, marketability and stability, etc.

In order to well-equipped for this economic changes, equipped with knowledge of data warehouse will be one of the beneficial solutions. The reasons why data warehouse is the choice can be listed below:

  1. The Change of Data Warehouse is less vigorous compared to Programming - As Data Warehousing became the key trend in corporate computing in the 1990s till now. The demand for data warehouse is still in growth with a steady rate disregarding the changes of economy. The pace of programming technology changed vigorously in the past ten years, the changes of data warehouse seems steadier compared to programming languages. With the market demand of data analysis with using business intelligence, the role data warehouse gets more important and higher in demand crossing from large enterprise to medium size companies.

  2. The Impact from Outsourcing to Data Warehouse is less compared to Application Development - Outsourcing is an unchangeable fact happened in IT today. More development or supporting jobs had been outsourced. From experience, quite a lot of big corporations found out that the data warehouse area is not easy and better not to outsourcing due to the reasons of maintenance, data privacy, etc.

  3. The Demand of Data Warehouse specialist is not heavily affected in a slow economy - In a slow economy, the first impact to IT is the stop of the application development due to budget control. Usually the business application development is the one first to be got hit due to the reason of priority. It is because data is the critical factor must be maintained for operation of the business. In some situation, investment on data management becomes important because companies need to increase their competitive power in turn in investment in the data analysis and marketing campaign plays important. It makes the data warehouse plays an important role in this special period of time.

  4. The Global Trend and Demand on Business Intelligence Drives the Need of Data Warehouse - As the business intelligence is widely in different industries, the demand of the data warehouse skill people increase as well. Business intelligence not only limited to client/server based or web-based only, but extended to the area of wireless. In addition, the growth of operational BI has also provided a message that more IT resources are needed in this area.

  5. Holding Information is Holding the Key of Business - However, data cannot leave aside and had to be maintained. Everyone knows “Holding the information is the holding the power”. It gives the sufficient reason that data warehouse or data management is more stable spot in a volatile economy.

  6. Transferable in Job Market – Equipped with the data warehouse knowledge, it will increase your capability to fit the job market of the data warehouse directly or indirectly. The previous IT experience is still an asset because data warehouse is not like a clear cut area from other IT area. It is closely related to the business application, ERP, CRM, etc. Having the knowledge the data warehouse, it can equip you to be a data modeler, ETL developer, BI developer, data warehouse QA or business system analyst, etc.

  7. The Software vendors Increase the competition in the Data Warehouse market – From the fact of the acquisition of the IBM to Cognos, SAP to Business Objects and Oracle to Hyperion, we do know that the big software vendors has a keen and big interest in the data warehouse and foresee the demand of the data warehouse. From the changes of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008, it confirms that the profit market in data warehouse cannot be neglected.

Not a lot of people can get to the cream of the technology, but everyone can catch the tide of the global trend. For sure data warehouse will still plays an important role in computer industry. No one can foresee when the impact of the subprime crisis will end, but you can decide how to prepare yourself facing the changes. The clever person is the one who get prepared before the storm coming. A wise choice is a turning point for a better life.
